Don't ask how, but I ended up with Stila 'Kitten' in both the smudge pot and the single eyeshadow. It involved an indecisive trip to Selfridges and a very tempting online sale.
Either way, I ended up with both so I thought I'd do a little comparison so that you guys can make an informed decision on which one is right for you. I really should have looked at a post like this before I went near the Stila concession....
I'll start by telling you that my favourite of the two is the eyeshadow. I swatched the smudge pot on my hand at the counter and liked it but when I got home and applied it, I was a bit disappointed. The colour is gorgeous, it's like a peachy champagne, but I don't like the formula. The cream shadow feels quite chunky and much more glittery than I expected. I don't know what it is, but something about it makes it quite hard to blend and it just didn't live up to my expectations.
The eyeshadow on the other hand is just what I hoped it would be. The colour is a bit more gold toned than the smudge pot and the shadow formula is perfect. For a powder eyeshadow it's incredibly buttery and soft, a bit like an Urban Decay eyeshadow. It's really easy to blend and I think it will come in much more useful to me than the smudge pot will.
You win some, you loose some and I'm happy I didn't let the smudge pot put me off because Stila 'Kitten' eyeshadow is really pretty.
Have you tried either of these? Which one do you prefer?

Not tried anything from Stila yet but this colour is absolutely beautiful. I prefer powder eye shadows in general and this sounds like a great formula! xx

I prefer Urban Decay's Sell Out over Kitten even though the colour is pretty much the same, Sell Out is more easy to work with..

The smudge pot version also seems to lean a little pinker in this swatch -- is that just the light or are they actually different? Probably won't make a huge difference when actually applied but I'm anal that way.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I prefer the Smudge Pot, despite it being a little on the gritty side, I found it blended really well and lasted for ages!!:) x

This is such a pretty color! I would definitely see myself more gravitating toward the shadow because I don't have good luck with cream shadows anyway, but they both look nice :)

The colour is so pretty! I definitely prefer the look of the eye shadow, I don't tend to get on with cream ones very well! xx

Wow, both of these look gorgeous, but I see what you're saying about the texture. The eye shadow looks so soft and smooth! I haven't tried Kitten, but I have Stila eye shadow in Oasis (a golden pinky peach) and absolutely love it! :)

It's funny, looking at them both in the pan I'd think I would like the Smudge Pot a lot more, but the color of the eye shadow swatch is so much more beautiful. Kitten has been on my radar since the summer, and thanks to your post I know which formula I should stick with! xx
ReplyDeleteLove it

I haven't tried the Smudge Pots by Stila but I have their "In the Light" palette and I love it. There's the perfect amount of shimmery eyeshadows and matte eyeshadows so it's easy to create a variety of look. You should definitely check it out!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting this color for ages. It looks gorgeous.

I'm so glad i read this as I've been tempted by the smudge pot in black for a while now but I'm not too sure anymore - I will probably give it a miss! The rose gold tones of these look lovely though xx

Love this stuff! I just made a blog recently i would love it if you checked it out and maybe made a comment http://ablogaboutfashionbeauty.blogspot.co.uk
ReplyDeleteI have the single eyeshadow version of Kitten, and I have to say if the smudge pot version isn't very smudgable I'm glad that I've stayed away from it!
ReplyDeleteThey're both such gorgeous colours though and the smudge pot does look pretty well pigmented :)

So glad I read this post, I've been wanting to pick up Stila Kitten for ages and had just decided that the smudge pot would be better for an inner corner highlight. You've not only convinced me not to buy the smudge pot, but you've reinforced my choice about wanting the eyeshadow - the swatches look amazing on your skin. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to pick up the shadow, and I'll do a review once I've tried it. You've completely inspired me! http://naomitara.blogspot.co.uk
I would probably prefer the smudge pot, but that's just because my eyelids get oily or watery or something, just slippery. Powder shadows don't last that well unless I use a good primer first or something like the smudge pot.
