Vintage Makeup

Thursday, 2 August 2012

This is a slightly different post. My mum's cousin was recently clearing out her house and came across all this makeup from the 70s (clearing hoarding makeup runs in the family). She was a model in the 60s/70s and so spent a lot of her time trying out new makeup and generally looking gorgeous.

I really wanted to share the photos I took with you because I just think it's so amazing to see some of these brands we know and love so well in their original packaging.

The two brands that are no longer available are Mary Quant (I'm sure you've all heard of her) and Miss Selfridge. Can you believe this Miss Selfridge makeup?! I feel like I kind of remember this from my childhood too, maybe they only stopped it recently?

The other brands are all well-known but quite unrecognisable. Maxfactor known as 'Maxi' is packaged in a very cheap, plastic tube next to a Body Shop lipstick that was then known as 'Colourings' (awful name). If you can see on the M&S eye shadow palette, it used to be called St Michael, but despite the religious sounding name it's a pretty decent looking quad!

I love the price labels on the Boots No.7 products... just 70p for a lipstick, I wish! If you look closely you'll see the instructions on the lipstick, "twist up half an inch". What I found really interesting is that the Bourjois lipstick looks much more luxury and expensive than the other brands. Bourjois is a big favourite in the beauty world and we all remember those rumours of it being manufactured in the same factory as Chanel (I don't think it's true) - it looks really nice in the sleek black packaging. And then there's the Avon lipstick, which is by far the most luxury looking of them all, packaged in a fabric lipstick holder!

I couldn't try the products for obvious reasons, but I thought you guys might find it interesting to see a bit of vintage makeup. I'm so jealous my mum was a teenager in the 60s/70s, it must have been amazing!

What do you think? Which makeup brand do you think you would have bought in the 60s and 70s?

Lily xx

  5. This is so interesting! I never knew Miss Selfridge did makeup! Maybe it was axed when Arcadia took over them (if they weren't originally owned by them?). I had no idea some of these brands had been established for so long ie. Bourjoirs and 17! xx

  8. Very interesting to see that they've lasted this long! So relieved when you said you wouldn't be trying them, 40 yr old make up would not be good for the skin!

  9. Mary Quant can still be found in Japan and Hong Kong now, but I think it's not the same manufacturer any more.

  14. Thanks for sharing this, I love seeing old packaging! Can't believe maxfactor was known as maxi.. sounds really cheap. Also, that miss Selfridge lipstick doesn't actually look too bad, I had no idea that they once did make up or even that the brand had been around so long! x

  19. My Mum has some really old makeup in her drawers (some of which I'm sure she still uses!). Some of it has Woolworths stickers on with prices like 80p. She has a lot of old Revlon makeup - it's really interesting to look at!

  27. What treasures! The Mary Quant products look great (if I were around in the 60's I'm sure I would have paired them with one of her famous mini skirts) and I love the number graphics on the Boots lipsticks! So 70's :)

And I remember when the Body Shop's makeup was called "Colourings"- I think my first ever makeup items was one of their lip glosses back in 1994- I was very chic in grade 5 ;)

  33. Wow - this makes me feel old!!! I remember the Body Shop being 'Colourings' and I remember Miss Selfridge make-=up - but I remember it in black and clear packaging with 2 silver heats on the top - like the same logo they use today. This must have been in the late 90s. I had an eyeshadow duo, nail varnish and glitter gel from there. I CRAVED the glitter gel before I bought it! Great post - loving the retro feel! :)

  40. Interestingly, accounting for inflation, if we assume the makeup is from 1970, the 70p lipstick would be £9.08 in today's money so it's actually about the same price.

Lovely to see how the brands have changed since then!

  52. I love looking at posts like this. I remember the Miss Selfridge "Kiss and Makeup" range very well. They had all sorts of things like temporary hair colour in little
pots. They should definately consider a relaunch. I remember in the stores how everyone used to crowd around the makeup testing all the nail polishes. I do feel ancient now! X
